These cases are perfectly simple and easy to distinguish. In a free hour, when our power of choice is untrammelled and when nothing prevents our being able to do what we like best, every pleasure is to be welcomed and every pain avoided. But in certain circumstances and owing to the claims of duty or the obligations of business it will frequently occur that pleasures have to be repudiated and annoyances accepted. The wise man therefore always holds in these matters to this principle of selection: he rejects pleasures to secure other greater pleasures, or else he endures pains to avoid worse pains.

The Lies about a great portfolio

  • There is One Optimal Portfolio for all investors.
  • All bonds and debts are created equal.
  • Inflation is no longer relevant.
  • Style and Market Capitalization are the only ways to gain an edge.
  • Consensus is comforting
  • A one-size-fits-all portfolio is good enough.
  • It's all about managing money.

Debunking the myths

  • Time horizons matter too much to investors.
  • In an asset class that runs the spectrum from largest, most liquid, and credit-sound investments in the world to niche, illiquid structured products, they're not all equal.
  • Nothing is set in stone.
  • Sector, active/passive and smart beta can't be overlooked.
  • Sticking to your long-term plan usually beats following the crowd.
  • You may be missing out on tax-efficient strategies.
  • Customers want more than that these days.

To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure?

Get Well Soon
01

Get Well Soon is a plain-looking artwork composed of text drawn from 200,000 comments on GoFundMe campaigns and little more. The comments range from commonplace sentiments to oddly specific tributes And the mix of messages bears out complex associations that Sam Lavigne and Tega Brain have said allude to the brokenness of a health-care system that in better shape would preclude the existence of such fundraising initiatives and the emotions that accompany them. In a year when millions struggled to make ends meet while facing medical emergencies of all kinds, Get Well Soon hit home.
Struggle: From the History of the American People

During the last days of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibition of Jacob Lawrence’s 1954–56 painting series “Struggle: From the History of the American People” this fall, a remarkable rediscovery took place in New York. A panel that had long been missing from the group of works was found in an apartment on the city’s Upper West Side.

In the hours following its triumph over Donald Trump in the Presidential election last month, the Biden-Harris campaign team released a video thanking voters and calling for unity in the days ahead. The video features shots of Americans from different backgrounds posing behind empty picture frames—a direct reference to one of the most seminal pieces in performance art history, Lorraine O’Grady’s 1983 performance Art
